ELIANA

By the time I slogged into work on Monday morning, Shea had consumed my entire weekend. I’d run out of that room so fast when he wanted to talk. That wasn’t what I needed, not what I wanted. It was supposed to be a night—or morning—of fun. No serious talk about how it wasn’t right for us to go there or how it had to mean more than it did.

The truth was, I didn’t know why I started it. Well, I knew why I went there Saturday night. Margaritas. The hangover hadn’t hit me until I was outside, waiting for an Uber driver to take me on a ridiculous ride back to Tampa. Note to self… don’t rely on Uber when your destination is an hour away. Always drive your own car.

But I shouldn’t have kissed him sober, shouldn’t have touched him, let him… A shiver raced through me. It was good. So freaking good, just like it always had been.

“You just going to stand there?” a voice asked.

I jumped. “Fuck.” Clutching my chest, I took in my surroundings. I’d been standing in the elevator without choosing a floor. “Did you have to sneak up on me, Sebastian?”

“I said hello three times.” He leaned in front of me to hit the button for his floor as well as mine. “You okay?”

“Fine.” I didn’t want to be stuck in this elevator with a man who looked too much like Shea. Their voices even held a similar tone, and it was all I could do not to open the hatch at the top and climb up the elevator shaft to my floor. I’d have to go faster than the elevator to avoid being crushed though. I wasn’t so sure it could work.

“Something interesting up there?” Sebastian followed my gaze to the hatch.

“What? No.”

“Really? Because it looked like you were contemplating an escape. I swear I put on deodorant this morning.”

“You smell wonderful.” Shit, I hadn’t meant to say that. But it was the truth. Whatever cologne Sebastian wore was subtle, yet kind of amazing. Woodsy-like. Not quite pine but something else.

Sebastian laughed. “You’re sufficiently weird this morning.”

I was weird every morning, but he didn’t need to know that. “I just need a coffee.”

And his brother. I needed that too.

“No wonder you and Shea didn’t work out. You’re too similar. He’s completely unhinged in the morning before he gets his shot of caffeine.”

He hadn’t seemed so unhinged yesterday. My face heated. Why was this elevator taking so long?

“Did I just say the wrong thing?” Sebastian asked. “I shouldn’t have brought him up. I’m sorry.”

For freak’s sake, Sebastian was such a nice guy. Why couldn’t he be an asshole so I could yell at him and make him stop talking to me? “No, it’s okay. That’s in the distant past.”

If yesterday counted as distant.

The elevator dinged, and I thanked the great coffee gods I wouldn’t have to crawl up any shafts. Or say shaft out loud. It would have sent Vera rolling with her dirty mind.
